Beginning at age 70½, you can directly transfer up to $100,000 per year from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualifying organization like Catholic Charities of Central Texas. Money transferred to a qualifying nonprofit organization is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) and is not considered taxable income. You may also see this type of gift referred to as an IRA charitable rollover.
Once you turn 73, QCDs can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution while excluded from your taxable income. For many donors, Qualified Charitable Distributions are a tax-efficient way to support their favorite nonprofit, whether or not they itemize their taxes.
To make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, contact your IRA administrator and instruct that individual to transfer funds to the charity (or charities) you designate.
