This year, Catholic Charities was honored to walk alongside hundreds of families through our St. Gabriel’s Pregnancy and Parenting Program. Among them was a young couple who recently became first-time parents while pursuing their PhDs at Texas A&M University. Their journey shows just how deeply these services touch lives and why they are so important.
As a newly married couple just starting their lives together, Adeyinka and her husband Aduragbeni were overjoyed when they learned they were going to become parents. But because they were originally from Nigeria and lived far away from their families, the couple faced the overwhelming challenge of caring for their baby almost entirely on their own. Amid these challenges, and with the demands of their PhD studies, they were stretched thin emotionally, financially, and mentally. They needed help, so they turned to Catholic Charities.
“I can tell you now — that was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made,” said Aduragbeni.
Nancy, their case manager, became their support system. She listened with kindness, shared encouragement, and became a source of hope during those tough early days. When the couple felt lost or worried, Nancy was there, reminding them they were strong and capable.
“From the first time I met Nancy, she made me feel safe. I was pregnant and very worried. I didn’t have my mom with me. I didn’t have any aunties or sisters. But Nancy sat with me and listened. She shared her own experiences. She reminded me that I was strong, and I could do this,” said Adeyinka.
Beyond the comfort and encouragement Nancy provided, the couple gained the confidence to step into their new role as mom and dad through our pregnancy and parenting classes. Surrounded by others who understood their journey, they built community and found reassurance that they weren’t alone. And when money was tight, the diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials from Catholic Charities were a lifeline. This support allowed Adeyinka and Aduragbeni to focus on what mattered most: their growing family.
“Every parent wants to give their child the best start in life. Because of Catholic Charities, we can do that,” said Aduragbeni.
Today, their baby boy is six months old and thriving. The parents are embracing this joyful new season with gratitude and confidence, thankful for the support that helped them start their family with love and strength in Central Texas.
“Catholic Charities gave us more than help — it gave us hope,” the couple shared.
Their story is a powerful reminder of the difference compassionate care can make for families trying their best. It’s why our St. Gabriel’s Pregnancy and Parenting Program is such a vital service in our community, and why your support can make a long-term impact on the life of a child.
